A Guide to Peanuts Reprint Collections

and Peanuts Classics Reprint Errors

(A Sort of Bibliography)

Compiled by Scott McGuire (smcguire at fivecentsplease dot org)
Last Updated: March 3, 2001

This page is historical document only! It is out of date and does not list the latest Ballantine strip collections or the Complete Peanuts collections. But it may be useful if you're trying to figure out what you need to get a complete collection of the older strip collections. (These days, of course, to get a complete Peanuts strip collection, all you need to do is go buy all the volumes of Fantagraphic's "Complete Peanuts" series.)

INTRODUCTION
------------
In this list I have tried to make sense of the various series of
Peanuts comics strip collections, and the ways in which they have been
reprinted.

I have also done a lot of work to find the errors in the current
Peanuts Classics series of reprints and detailed them below;
unfortunately, they're numerous.

Basically, there have been eight reprint series:

* the ORIGINAL series of collections (1954 - 1974);
* the PEANUTS PARADE series (1976 - 1986);
* the "Fawcett paperback" series of reprints (1960's - 1990's);
* the PEANUTS CLASSICS series (1990 - 1996);
* a series published by Topper Books (1987 - 1991);
* a series published by Andrews & McMeel (1994 - 1995);
* a few published by HarperCollins (1999);
* a series published by Ballantine Books (2000 - ??).

The term ORIGINAL for the first series is something of a misnomer, as
several of the PARADE series and all of the Topper Books and Andrews &
McMeel books were not reprints of the ORIGINALs but in fact collections
of strips that had not been published in book form before.

This is *not* a complete bibliography of all Peanuts books. I don't
have most of the Fawcett paperback reprints, so I haven't included them
in this list. See one of the other bibliographies for information
about them.

There have also been numerous other Peanuts books: theme anthologies
of strips (such as "The Snoopy Festival" and "Classroom Peanuts"),
storybooks based on the television shows, foreign-language reprints,
and others. For information on those titles, I recommend the other
Peanuts bibliographies on the web:

AAUGH.com's Peanuts book guide -
  <http://AAUGH.com/guide/>
Jym Dyer's Peanuts Bibliography -
  <http://www.remarque.org/~jym/funnies/peanuts-bibliography.html>
Derrick Bang's Peanuts Chronological Book List -
  <http://www.fivecentsplease.org/dpb/books.html>

Sadly, even if you get a complete set of these collections, you still
won't have all of the strips ever published, because many strips have
been omitted from the collections (Derrick Bang estimates that 2,500 -
3,000 strips have never been reprinted). (The theme anthologies, e.g.
"The Snoopy Festival", do contain some strips not in any of the "main"
collections mentioned below, so they are worth getting.)

If you find any errors or have corrections and additional information,
please let me know.

Thanks to Nat Gertler who provided additional information,
corrections, and books!

Also thanks to Satoshi Fujishima for further information and detailed
analysis of errors in the Peanuts Classics series.

FURTHER NOTES ON EACH SERIES
----------------------------
ORIGINALS: I chose to call the initial series of Peanuts
comic strip collections the "original" series, for the lack of a
better name. These were 5" x 8" books whose covers were a solid color
with a single Peanuts illustration on the cover; some were even
printed horizontally ("longwise") to accommodate Sunday strips, but
were reformatted in subsequent printings to be vertical. Later they
were reprinted with uniform covers that are predominantly white or
beige, with one large color panel on the front The publisher was Holt,
Rinehart and Winston. This series was published from the early 1950's
until 1974. All ORIGINALs are out of print.

WEEKLY READER REPRINTS: Many ORIGINALS were reprinted in hardback by
Weekly Reader Books - if you have a hardcover version of one of them,
it's most likely a Weekly Reader edition (look on the back cover, or
on the copyright page). Unfortunately many of the Weekly Reader
editions are abridged - they do not contain all the strips the
ORIGINAL paperback did - but aren't marked as abridgements. You can
tell the abridged versions because they have 100 pages or less,
including end papers. This is one case where having a hardcover may
not be better! Nat Gertler's bibliography has more details.

PEANUTS PARADE: This was a series of reprints, published in 1976 and
1977, and several collections of previously uncollected strips. (For
these non-reprint PARADEs, the ORIGINALs entry has an "n/a" because
there is no equivalent for these collections.)

They were large-size 7" x 10" paperbacks, issued in a numbered series
(although the numbers had no relation to chronology, as you can see
from the list). The covers tended to be colorful, with the banner
"Peanuts Parade" at the top of the front, and had a representative
strip printed on the back. (The cover of the last in the series, "The
Way of the Fussbudget Is Not Easy," has a somewhat different format
than the rest.) They were published by Henry Holt, and later, Owl
Books, which is an imprint of Henry Holt. All PARADE books are out of
print, although occasionally one can still find them in remainder
stores.

PEANUTS CLASSICS: The "Peanuts Classics" books were published during
the 1990's and reprinted almost all of the original series (see below).
Unfortunately, they are now mostly out of print as well.

They are the same size as the ORIGINAL collections (5" x 8") and have
solid-color covers with the banner "Peanuts Classics" at the top and a
representative strip on the back cover, with a description of the
contents. They were all published by Owl Books, an imprint of Henry
Holt.

There are numerous errors in these books; I have editions with repeated
and missing pages (relative to the ORIGINAL), and some do not reprint
the books these claim to reprint. I have tried to note the major
errors, although I haven't marked most of the small ones.

WHAT HASN'T BEEN REPRINTED BY THE PEANUTS CLASSICS SERIES:
The last half of the ORIGINAL "Good Grief, More Peanuts!!!" is not
reprinted due to an error; see NOTE 6.

Only the first half the ORIGINAL "You're You, Charlie Brown" and the
last half ORIGINAL "You've Come a Long Way, Charlie Brown" are
reprinted in the CLASSICS series (as "You've Come a Long Way, Charlie
Brown"), even though there was more than enough material in each
ORIGINAL for a CLASSIC book of their own, so neither of those
ORIGINALs have been reprinted in their entirety; see NOTE 7.

FORMAT OF THE LIST
------------------
For all books until 1986, there are three entries - the ORIGINAL book
title, the PARADE book title(s), and the CLASSICS book title(s). Since
the post-1987 series have not been reprinted (except as Fawcett
paperbacks), they are simply listed on their own at the bottom.

Many of the ORIGINAL series were split across two different PARADE
books; in those cases, I have written "(half)" in front of the
PARADE title, and listed both PARADE books. Similarly, some of the
non-reprint PARADE books have been split into different CLASSIC
editions.

The date listed after each title is the date of first publication. If
followed by a question mark, that means I am unsure of the date, but in
most cases I inferred it from the other data.

When the CLASSICS fail to reprint the ORIGINAL or PARADE properly,
I have placed a notation of "(errors)" after the title. The problem
is described in the NOTES section for each entry.

ORIGINALS/PARADES/CLASSICS
--------------------------
ORIGINAL: Peanuts - 1952
PARADE: (not reprinted in this series)
CLASSICS: (not reprinted in this series)
NOTES:
* This book has never been reprinted as part of any other series
(the Fawcett paperbacks, the Parade series, or the Classics series),
although it went through at least 29 printings in the Original form.

ORIGINAL: More Peanuts - 1954
PARADE: There Goes the Shutout! (#13) - 1977
CLASSICS: There Goes the Shutout! - 1990

ORIGINAL: Good Grief, More Peanuts! - 1956
PARADE: (half) There Goes the Shutout! (#13)
(half) Always Stick Up for the Underbird (#14)
CLASSICS: Good Grief, More Peanuts! - 1994 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Original edition had a page with the character's faces and
names, which is omitted from the Parade and Classics editions.
* The Classics is not a complete reprint. It's missing the last
half of the material from the Original. It erroneously reprints
the first half of Original "Good Ol' Charlie Brown" instead.

ORIGINAL: Good Ol' Charlie Brown - 1957
PARADE: Always Stick Up for the Underbird (#14) - 1977
CLASSICS: Always Stick Up for the Underbird - 1992

ORIGINAL: Snoopy - 1958
PARADE: What Makes You Think You're Happy (#5) - 1976?
CLASSICS: What Makes You Think You're Happy - 1990
NOTES:
* The Original "Snoopy" was designed to be a collection of
Snoopy-only strips. As such, it reprints strips that had previously
  appeared in other Originals.
* The Classics copyright page gives an incorrect printing history. It
says "originally published as 'Snoopy' in 1973," really "Snoopy" was
  first published in 1958.

ORIGINAL: You're Out of Your Mind, Charlie Brown - 1958
PARADE: (half) What Makes You Think You're Happy? (#5)
(half) Fly, You Stupid Kite, Fly! (#6)
CLASSICS: You're Out of Your Mind, Charlie Brown! - 1993

ORIGINAL: But We Love You, Charlie Brown - 1959
PARADE: Fly, You Stupid Kite, Fly! (#6) - 1976
CLASSICS: Fly, You Stupid Kite, Fly! - 1990

ORIGINAL: Go Fly a Kite, Charlie Brown - 1960
PARADE: Thank Goodness for People (#9) - 1976
CLASSICS: Thank Goodness for People - 1991
NOTES:
* The Classic title page gives incorrect reprint information. It
says the book contains "cartoons from 'Go Fly A Kite, Charlie Brown'
and 'Peanuts Every Sunday'" but really they're all from "Go Fly A
Kite," as is correctly stated on the copyright page. (The confusion
probably results from Parade edition of the same title.)

ORIGINAL: Peanuts Every Sunday - 1961
PARADE: (half) Thank Goodness for People (#9)
(half) What Makes Musicians So Sarcastic? (#10)
CLASSICS: Peanuts Every Sunday - 1994

ORIGINAL: It's a Dog's Life, Charlie Brown - 1962
PARADE: What Makes Musicians So Sarcastic? (#10) - 1976
CLASSICS: What Makes Musicians So Sarcastic? - 1992
NOTES:
* The Classics back cover incorrectly says strips are from 1960.
  Really they're from 1960-62.

ORIGINAL: Snoopy, Come Home - 1962
PARADE: The Mad Punter Strikes Again (#7) - 1976
CLASSICS: The Mad Punter Strikes Again - 1991
NOTES:
* Original should not be confused with the adaption of the movie of
the same name (which is actually called 'The "Snoopy, Come Home"
  Movie Book').
* The Original "Snoopy Come Home" was designed to be a collection of
Snoopy-only strips. As such, it reprints strips that had previously
  appeared in other Originals.

ORIGINAL: You Can't Win, Charlie Brown - 1962
PARADE: (half) The Mad Punter Strikes Again (#7)
(half) A Kiss On the Nose Turns Anger Aside (#8)
CLASSICS: You Can't Win, Charlie Brown - 1994

ORIGINAL: You Can Do It, Charlie Brown - 1963
PARADE: A Kiss On the Nose Turns Anger Aside (#8) - 1976
CLASSICS: A Kiss On the Nose Turns Anger Aside - 1992
NOTES:
* Both the Parade and Classics reprints have one page different
from the Original (the 10th page of comics). I don't know if
the "incorrect" page is reprinted from some other book, or are
  just different (previously uncollected) strips.

ORIGINAL: We're Right Behind You, Charlie Brown - 1964
PARADE: There's a Vulture Outside (#3) - 1976?
CLASSICS: There's a Vulture Outside - 1991
NOTES:
* The Classic edition has the same comic on the 55th page as
the 56th, so is missing one page from the Original. (The Parade
reprint does not have this problem.)

ORIGINAL: Sunday's Fun Day, Charlie Brown - 1965
PARADE: (half) There's A Vulture Outside (#3)
(half) What's Wrong With Being Crabby (#4)
CLASSICS: Sunday's Fun Day, Charlie Brown - 1993 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Classics is not a complete reprint. In fact, it's a complete
mess. 10-20 pages are wrong, either duplicates of other pages in
this book, and some pages from other books.
* Interestingly, this problem apparently started with the Parade
reprints; in the Parade "What's Wrong With Being Crabby," the part
that reprints the Original "Sunday's Fun Day" has repeated and
  erroneous pages too.

ORIGINAL: As You Like It, Charlie Brown - 1964
PARADE: What's Wrong With Being Crabby? (#4) - 1976
CLASSICS: What's Wrong With Being Crabby? - 1992

ORIGINAL: You Need Help, Charlie Brown - 1965
PARADE: Who's The Funny-Looking Kid With the Big Nose? (#1) - 1976
CLASSICS: Who's The Funny-Looking Kid With the Big Nose? - 1993

ORIGINAL: The Unsinkable Charlie Brown - 1967
PARADE: (half) Who's The Funny-Looking Kid With the Big Nose? (#1)
(half) It's a Long Way to Tipperary (#2)
CLASSICS: The Unsinkable Charlie Brown - 1994

ORIGINAL: You'll Flip, Charlie Brown - 1967
PARADE: It's a Long Way to Tipperary (#2) - 1976
CLASSICS: It's a Long Way to Tipperary - 1993
NOTES:
* The Classics back cover says it contains strips from 1981, but
  really they're from 1967.

ORIGINAL: You're Something Else, Charlie Brown - 1967
PARADE: A Smile Makes A Lousy Umbrella (#17) - 1977
CLASSICS: A Smile Makes A Lousy Umbrella - 1991

ORIGINAL: You're You, Charlie Brown - 1968
PARADE: (half) A Smile Makes a Lousy Umbrella (#17)
(half) My Anxieties Have Anxieties (#18)
CLASSICS: You've Come a Long Way, Charlie Brown - 1995 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Classics "You've Come a Long Way" reprints material from both
the Originals "You've Come a Long Way" and "You're You" -- which is
strange, since both the originals had enough material for an entire
Classics reprint each. The first half of the book reprints the last
half of the Original "You've Come a Long Way." The second half of
the Classics reprints the first half of the Original "You're You."

ORIGINAL: You've Had It, Charlie Brown - 1969
PARADE: My Anxieties Have Anxieties (#18) - 1977
CLASSICS: My Anxieties Have Anxieties - 1991

ORIGINAL: You're Out of Sight, Charlie Brown - 1970
PARADE: It's Great To Be A Superstar (#19) - 1977
CLASSICS: It's Great To Be a Superstar - 1990

ORIGINAL: You've Come a Long Way, Charlie Brown - 1971
PARADE: (half) It's Great To Be A Superstar (#19)
(half) Stop Snowing on My Secretary! (#20)

ORIGINAL: Ha Ha Herman, Charlie Brown - 1972
PARADE: Stop Snowing On My Secretary! (#20) - 1977
CLASSICS: Stop Snowing On My Secretary! - 1992

ORIGINAL: Thompson Is in Trouble, Charlie Brown - 1973
PARADE: It's Hard Work Being Bitter (#15) - 1977
CLASSICS: It's Hard Work Being Bitter - 1992

ORIGINAL: You're the Guest of Honor, Charlie Brown - 1973
PARADE: (half) It's Hard Work Being Bitter (#15)
(half) How Long, Great Pumpkin, How Long? (#16)
CLASSICS: You're the Guest of Honor, Charlie Brown - 1993 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Classics is not a complete reprint. Several (3-4) pages are
duplicates of other pages in this book, resulting in missing strips,
and many are out of order.

ORIGINAL: Win a Few, Lose a Few, Charlie Brown - 1974
PARADE: How Long, Great Pumpkin, How Long? (#16) - 1977
CLASSICS: How Long, Great Pumpkin, How Long? - 1990
NOTES:
* The Classics copyright page incorrectly says it reprints "You're
the Guest of Honor, Charlie Brown." It really reprints "Win a Few,
Lose a Few, Charlie Brown" as it correctly says on title page.
("You're the Guest of Honor" is reprinted under its own title in the
  Classics series.)

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: Speak Softly, and Carry a Beagle (#11) - 1975
CLASSICS: (half) Speak Softly, and Carry A Beagle - 1990
(half) Duck, Here Comes Another Day (1995) (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "Duck, Here Comes Another Day" is missing about 6 pages of
  strips from the Parade.

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: Don't Hassle Me With Your Sighs, Chuck (#12) - 1976
CLASSICS: (half) Don't Hassle Me With Your Sighs, Chuck - 1993

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: Summers Fly, Winters Walk (#21) - 1977
CLASSICS: (half) Summers Fly, Winters Walk - 1991
(half) The Cheshire Beagle - 1995 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "The Cheshire Beagle" is missing 2 pages of strips
  from the Parade.

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: The Beagle Has Landed (#22) - 1978
CLASSICS: (half) The Beagle Has Landed - 1991
(half) The Cheshire Beagle - 1995 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "The Cheshire Beagle" is missing 2 pages of strips
(the last two pages from the Parade).

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: And a Woodstock In a Birch Tree (#23) - 1979
CLASSICS: And a Woodstock In a Birch Tree (half) - 1991
Nothing Echoes Like An Empty Mailbox (half) - 1996 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "Nothing Echoes Like an Empty Mailbox" is missing
2 pages of strips from the Parade, the ones starting with
"Sir Walter Scott's most famous novel..." and "Homework?
No, ma'am, I forgot to do my homework".

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: Here Comes the April Fool! (#24) - 1980
CLASSICS: Here Comes the April Fool (half) - 1992
Nothing Echoes Like An Empty Mailbox (half) - 1996

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: Dr. Beagle and Mr. Hyde (#25) - 1981
CLASSICS: Dr. Beagle and Mr. Hyde (half) - 1990
          I Heard a D-Minus Call Me (half) - 1996

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: You're Weird, Sir! (#26) - 1982
CLASSICS: You're Weird, Sir! (half) - 1993
          I Heard a D-Minus Call Me (half) - 1996 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "I Heard a D-Minus Call Me" is missing 1 page of strips
  (because of a duplicated page).

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: Kiss Her, You Blockhead! (#27) - 1983
CLASSICS: Kiss Her, You Blockhead! (half) - 1990
Sarcasm Does Not Become You, Ma'am (half) - 1996 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "Sarcasm Does Not Become You" duplicates about 8 pages that
are also in the Classics "Kiss Her, You Blockhead", so 8 pages are
  missing.

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: I'm Not Your Sweet Baboo! (#28) - 1984
CLASSICS: I'm Not Your Sweet Baboo! (half) - 1992
Sarcasm Does Not Become You, Ma'am (half) - 1996 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Parade is not completely reprinted in the Classics. The
Classics "Sarcasm Does Not Become You" is missing 1 page of strips.

ORIGINAL: n/a
PARADE: The Way of the Fussbudget is Not Easy (#29) - 1986
CLASSICS: The Way of the Fussbudget is Not Easy - 1993 (errors)
NOTES:
* The Classics only reprints about 2/3rds of the material from the
Parade; the rest is not available anywhere in the Classics.

TOPPER BOOKS COLLECTIONS
------------------------
* The last PARADE book was published in 1986. Then a new publisher,
Topper Books, picked up the reprint series (starting where the
PARADE books left off), and are numbered, starting over at 1 again.
* There are no Classics reprints of these books, although there were
  Fawcett editions.

Dogs Don't Eat Dessert (#1) - 1987
You're on the Wrong Foot Again, Charlie Brown (#2) - 1987
By Supper Possessed (#3) - 1988
Talk is Cheep, Charlie Brown (#4) - 1988
It Doesn't Take Much to Attract a Crowd (#5) - 1989
If Beagles Could Fly (#6) - 1990
Don't be Sad, Flying Ace (#7) - 1990
Could You Be More Pacific? (#8) - 1991

ANDREWS & MCMEEL COLLECTIONS
----------------------------
* After several years hiatus, new Peanuts collections from yet
another publisher (Andrews & McMeel) appeared. "Being a Dog Is a
Full-Time Job" picks up where the last Topper book left off.
However, after only 3 collections, this series ended.

Being a Dog Is a Full-Time Job - 1994
Around the World in 45 Years - 1994
This book contains 20-some pages of text introduction written by
Charles M. Schulz, reflecting on the strip and events that have
influenced it; then it contains about a years worth of previously
  uncollected strips.
Make Way for the King of the Jungle - 1995

HARPERCOLLINS COLLECTIONS
-------------------------
* After several more years of hiatus, HarperCollins published 4 new
chronological strip collections and the 50th anniversary collection
"A Golden Celebration." (They also published numerous "gift"
books which contained strips, but weren't systematic collections.)
Each is about 5 x 8 and contains 176 pages.

Dogs Are Worth It - 1999
Now That's Profound, Charlie Brown - 1999
I Told You So, You Blockhead - 1999
The World Is Filled With Mondays - 1999
Peanuts - A Golden Celebration - 1999
A big, coffee-table sized book with a selection of strips from
the entire 50-year history of Peanuts, including numerous ones
that have not appeared in previous collections.

BALLANTINE BOOKS COLLECTIONS
----------------------------
* In 2000, the reprint license abruptly switched to Ballantine
Books, who have started their series off with a book reprinting
strips from the final year of the strip. It includes every
single strip, and all in color! More collections are supposedly
  in the works.

Peanuts 2000 - 2000
Includes all the strips from 1/1/99 to 2/13/00. Note that due to
an error, the first printing does not include the final strip as
advertised. This has been corrected in the second printing of
  the book.
